Explicit vs Implicit teaching

Lay down your thoughts!

  1. The podcast TalkinL2 with BVP on Explicit v Implicit was interesting. It was helpful to hear the host of the show explain the differences of both explicit and implicit. Explicit is explaining to learners how something works, where as Implicit is the same thing but lacks explanation of a certain task or activity. An example of explicit teaching in the world language classroom would be explaining to students the past tense and completing an activity afterwards. On the contrary, implicit teaching in the world language classroom would not be explaining the past tense but would be doing activities to get their students to learn the information naturally. As a Spanish teacher, it is more easy to be an explicit teacher because this would be teaching from a textbook and be mandated to a traditional grammar driven curriculum. This would be interesting and fun for me but the world language students would not find this method spontaneous, engaging, or authentic. The implicit way of teaching is more challenging and requires more planning, incorporation of culture, and background knowledge of your students. I was happy to hear that both methods are beneficial for world language students but the data from the implicit way of teaching have higher gains in language acquisition and assessments. However, I was not happy to hear about the bias that occurs with explicit teaching and assessments. "At least 90 percent of assessment measures that they looked at invited the use of explicit knowledge". As a Spanish teacher, my style is more implicit because I do not have a specific grammatical or vocabulary agenda and I focus on content, comprehensible input, and highly frequently used vocabulary. I disagree with the host with the focus of certain sentence structures because I like to frequently teach my students commonly used everyday expressions in the target language. I enjoyed the host, co-hosts, and questions from the callers and I look forward to more episodes on the podcast TalkinL2 with BVP.
