Words to Get Rid Of (Talkin L2 with BVP)

Susan mentioned the word foreign among words that we should get rid of in the world of Language learning and reiterated that " BVP also notes that millions of people in the US speak two languages at home, so there is nothing “foreign” about the 2nd language they already speak at home." Did that part resonate with you as well? What else stood out to you?

Interrumpimos este programa

I don't know why I always seem to love the newer stories than others, this one from 2018.  Not to mention that it's about the unrest in Nicaragua during that period.  Being that we had planned to go to Nicaragua in 2019, and our trip had to be relocated, I had looked into this unrest a TON in 2018, and had a really hard time finding anything profound.  And here it is.  What did YOU think about this episode?

El mago

This episode was interesting!  I didn't love it at first but it gets good when you start to hear the family dynamic, about life as an inmigrante and what people must do to survive.  What did you think?

S1E3 Is it possible that explicit teaching and practice are useful?

Did BVP's answer differ from what you THOUGHT the answer to the question would be? What stood out?  I felt like I knew what the answer would be, so the most salient to me in this episode were the callers and the discussion that ensued. How about you?

La importancia de llamarse Ernesto

Oh.  My.  God.  I LOVED this episode.  It is quite possibly the PERFECT episode for Identidades.  We talked a lot about the importance of your name and your identity, about how "closing doors" have such an impact on one's identity, plus a million other things that came up in this episode (family & identity, revolutionaries, etc). We're almost done with the unit, so I gave it to the kids for Tarea del mes and Desarrollo, but that's it for this year. It's amazing. You'll love it.  What stood out to you?

Nada que curar

What a tear jerker!  This one was an eloquent episode that really pulled at my heartstrings, especially for Andres and the other people who were tortured.  Check it out. This episode is highly linked to LGBTQIA rights, religion and the choque cultural that comes with it. The episode focuses on rights / religion in Ecuador.

Farewell and the future of SLA

So sad that this was one of the best episodes yet.  Here are a few of the things that stood out to me: "We need to seize control" "Instructed SLA has lost its footing" & "SLA researchers need to talk to teachers". We think of ourselves as "teaching language instead of telling a story." What stood out to you?  Do you question anything that BVP said or do you stand behind it?
