Words to Get Rid Of (Talkin L2 with BVP)
Susan mentioned the word foreign among words that we should get rid of in the world of Language learning and reiterated that "BVP also notes that millions of people in the US speak two languages at home, so there is nothing “foreign” about the 2nd language they already speak at home." Did that part resonate with you as well? What else stood out to you?
This weeks episode (Words to Get Rid Of) with Bill Van Patten and Talkin L2 was thought provoking because he talked about words to eliminate in language teaching. The callers and the host focused on the word "foreign" because it has negative connotations such as alien, exotic, odd, incapable of being assimilated, and much more as it relates to language and education. This is the part that resonated with me as the host went through a list of synonyms that are related to the word "foreign". Yes, it was eye opening to hear all of the different cultures that speak another language within their homes and communities in the world. It was also interesting to learn that Paraguay has two official languages, which are Spanish and GuaranĂ.
