La importancia de llamarse Ernesto

Oh.  My.  God.  I LOVED this episode.  It is quite possibly the PERFECT episode for Identidades.  We talked a lot about the importance of your name and your identity, about how "closing doors" have such an impact on one's identity, plus a million other things that came up in this episode (family & identity, revolutionaries, etc). We're almost done with the unit, so I gave it to the kids for Tarea del mes and Desarrollo, but that's it for this year.

It's amazing. You'll love it.

What stood out to you?

  1. I liked this episode but it didn't move me as much as many others have. I do agree that it is PERFECT for the Identidades theme. We read the chapter from Casa en Mango Street called "Mi Nombre" where Sandra Cisneros talks about her name and its significance to her. This leads to a discussion about the origin of the students' names, their apodos, how they feel about their names, if they would change them if they could, etc. This podcast will fit in perfectly with that discussion and then have so many amazing off-shoots for discussion/exploration. As Carolyn mentioned, there's so much to explore related to family as well as national/ethnic identities related to the revolutionary component. This could lead to an exploration of the history of the historical situation in Puerto Rico, as well as cross-connections to other fights for liberty (e.g., Cataluña, ETA, etc.).
